After 5 grueling days the South African teams can all hold their heads high after a successful campaign. The Mens Open (8-5 over Japan), the Mixed Open (11-4) over Wales and the Senior Mixed (4-3 over England all secured Bronze medals while the Mens 35’s team had a great tournament securing Silver medals after going down 11-6 to Australia in the final.

The Ladies Open Team finished 6th and the Mens 30’s finished 5th.

Overall the Australians showed their dominance of World Touch once more winning 5 out of 7 finals. New Zealand winning the other 2.

This showing once again keeps South Africa world ranking number 3. Well Done Guys!!!

Trevor Leith has been a part of In 2 Touch as a ref since the beginning of the year. He has come in to replace Budgie Diya who was an integral part of the In 2 Touch set-up over the last 3 years.

Budgie opted to further his personal career in a position in sales and marketing and we wish him all the best for his future…

On this note – We wish Trevor all the best as well and know that he is raring to go to make Sandton and Zoo Lake the best leagues in the country!

All teams are still in the medal hunt although today will be make or break for some!

With the Mens Open team having drawn 2 games yesterday (which they would have hoped to have won) against England (5-5) and against the Cook Islands (4-4), they have it all to play for today with games against Scotland this morning and the two biggies in New Zealand and Australia this afternoon.

In what will be expected to be an elimination game before the Semi Finals, they will take on Japan on Saturday morning. The Japanese are surprisingly competitive and are currently unbeaten, although they too still need to face New Zealand, Australia and England.

Two Capetonians in the Open Team, James Plimsoll and Stewart Black have got a Blog going and you can catch up with news directly from Scotland on http://suchistouch.com/

The Womens Open are currently top of their pool, but will probably be disappointed with their 4-4 draw with Wales yesterday…

In other news, the much fancied Mens Over 35’s with SA Touch Stalwarts Garth Macintosh and Stewart White attending their 5th World Cups, had a mixed day on Thursday beating England 4-3 and losing to Australia 3-9.

The Mens 30’s also had a disappointing day losing to Fiji 4-5 and England 3-4 on either side of a 10-4 win over Japan.

The Senior Mixed side are also still in with a chance of a medal, but must beat England and the USA today to stay in the running.

Finally, the Mixed Open Team is having a great tournament, only having lost to Australia and their hopes of a medal are firmly still intact. Ashwell (Goofy) Gordon is currently one of the leading Try Scorers of the section with 12, just 3 behind Australian Sarah Peattie.

Team SA has been flying the flag high for our Country thus far in WC 2011, and with the business end of the tournament drawing nearer things can get really interesting. The Mens side has really performed well in the pool stages beating Singapore 9 – 1 and beating the likes of Scotland 7 – 2 and as a result finished top of their group and made them qualify for the Cup group where they drew 5 all with England.

The SA Women team has also really impressed by finishing top of the log winning all 4 their pool games and now qualify for the Cup group…in the pool stages they managed to win a cliffhanger versus England winning 4 – 3. Claire Paton has been a revelation in the side scoring 4 tries in 3 games and could be vital for the team come the knockouts. Check out results & fixtures for the SA women side.
There will be updates on the Mixed and senior teams tomorrow… Remember also to get up to date scoring and Log positioning from http://www.touchworldcup2011.co.uk/fixtures-results/
